I have a film screening in Sherman Oaks CA, Oct 3 5PM and Oct 6 8PM at the CAP theater. It's about software development and think you will find it amusing. If you are interested in checking it out, and maybe writing something about it on your blog, let me know and I can have a ticket at will call.

Hi Ray-- fantastic list.

CIOs often struggle to find a partner to help them answer these questions and make the transition to cloud computing. Their traditional partners have too much to lose to move from the status quo, and have expertise in all the wrong areas-- it doesn't matter anymore how good they are at managing a server farm.

That's why we expect a new type of partner to emerge, offering what we are calling "cloudsourcing." Its the natural combination of two trends that have dominated how enterprises utilize information technology over the last 2 decades. The first is a shift in how IT is architected-- from mainframe to client server to cloud-based technology. The second is a shift in how IT is sourced and delivered--from a purely in-house function to a function increasingly delivered by specialized vendors.

<a href="http://blog.appirio.com/2009/09/cloudsourcing-where-cloud-computing.html" rel="nofollow">Here's our take on cloudsourcing</a>-- looking forward to continuing the dialog!

Ray, let me add (1) with models-driven development, the logical domain models and phyical object models plus the models-to-apps "tool" must be escrowed, and (2) the work of the HR-XML Consortium is making a real dent in the centralized model for HRM apps integration.

Excellent Job Ray!

I really like some of the scenarios for the future, especially using PaaS and IaaS in the way you describe the world of tomorrow. I do believe that SaaS are the most advanced layer in the three-layer model of deployment for tomorrow, and you point out very well how little we are touching on IaaS and PaaS by putting all our focus on the apps. Apps are going to be a walk in the park as compared to some of the issues you touch on (MDM, Integration and Architecture, Security and Flow, and more).

Very well done...

Ray - this is a great Top 10 list. Thanks for posting. It will be interesting to watch emerging companies like Workday, CastIron, and Zoho become more commonly evaluated vendors as the Cloud / SaaS market matures. I agree that there will be vendor consolidation and Microsoft, SAP, and Oracle will be in the thick of acquisitions. The Single tenancy (Private) vs. Multi-tenancy approach will continue to attract more attention as well.
