My opinion. Heroku has become more associated with the lite social gamification app deployments than the open source community. Heroku is default deployment at RubyBoot camps / Startup Weekends / Woman 2.0 events.

I would imagine SalesForce will mint money out of Heroku. Once a Heroku app gets hit by traffic. Your credit card is correspondingly hit by charges.

I'd like to think so Ray but I'm not so sure...

In my experience open source communities have emerged almost in a 'rage against the machine' way when faced with the lock in and slow down in technology advances that occur when vendors attempt to lock down and commercialise technology.

Some developers will have a look and try, just as they are doing with Azure and Amazon, so SF wont have it all their own way... At the end of the day competition is good for the industry and only time will tell who wins.

Regards, Stuart

Stuart - great question. I think Open Source communities and vendors such as SFDC can work hand in hand. In the new model of work, you can expect a good deal of give and take. The challenge w/ open source has always been a need for balancing greater governance w/ an open model. I hope SFDC can pave the way to show that both can co-exist. What do you think? - Ray

Hi Ray, Interesting times... a serious play by SF to position themselves as a cloud vendor (as opposed to a cloud app vendor) and to take on the likes of Azure and Amazon in the PaaS space... However, what impact do you think this acquisition will have on the open source community?
