Ray,

It seems somewhat ironic that in the age of bootstrapped Web 2.0 innovation that industrial-age tech thinking persists. For example, the concept of focusing on large tech companies when there is so much growth and innovation in smaller business. Your point of "encouraging entrepreneurs" is appropos because so much innovation potential is provided to prop up organizations that are insulated from the need to innovate.

You're bang-on by point out that holistic solutions are needed. One doesn't turn on innovation one morning.

Richard - thanks for your point of view. I think you'll find many people nodding their heads right now! If there's anything we can do to help, let us know? - Ray

Great article. Good evaluation of the current state of play. Like most aspiring foreign based web startups we have a San Francisco office just to be visible as players in the SV spectacle, but as to whether it is really necessary to go as far as move there I'm not yet fully convinced. There are also great pockets of entrepreneurship elsewhere that are as well funded, but which don't have the profile and volume of shoulder-rubbing wheelers and dealers.
If I could be convinced our early stage story would be funded for growth, I'd move us all there like a shot. Meantime SV actually only changes the lives of a very small number of global entrepreneurs.

The strength of the Valley has been to create an environment conducive to financing innovation. In a world where there has been a re-distribution of talent and centers of innovation, the valley can still remain ahead of the game. Now it just has to hunker down and do it better and for more- broaden its scope to include other industries that create jobs, industries other than IT. Can it do that?

Great piece Ray. Western countries, and the US in particular, have to invest in infrastructure and education, to maintain a leadership position. It must be a long term strategy not a photo op.
