- Support. Most requests fall in the technical support category. Support cases typically include installation issues, integration questions, third product compatibility, and complex scenario resolutions.

The Bottom Line - Users Should Demand A Split In Maintenance And Support
Now's the time to seek options in maintenance. Shelfware reduction, third party maintenance (3PM), and contract re negotiations should provide some relief at the business level. However, decoupled maintenance from support options opens up the customer base to internal and third party options. Interesting post about the history of support and maintenance being coupled. It seems like a good potential differentiator during the sales process. I wonder to what extent, if any, ERP clients’ requests to do this would find an audience. Would Oracle or SAP go this route just because Microsoft is doing it? Perhaps as SaaS and open source gain more ground, vendors might have to consider things like this.
In my time with JDE and Dynamics, I met customers who had decided to stop paying maintenance and were running on an ‘older’ version of the product. It’s cost-effective until the time came to upgrade the ERP – then the customer had to pay the full licence price as though they were getting the software for the first time; and of course by then the issues and costs of the migration can also be significant. Companies doing this should be aware they they need to do thorough comparative cost analysis.
